Month of Prayer and Giving Day 25- Making Haste Slowly

“Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.”
Proverbs 19:12 ESV

The Lord’s work must be approached with a sense of urgency. However, in our haste to do His work, we must not act hastily. We must – in the right sense of the words – be measured and cautious. We must make haste slowly.

One of the things that impresses me about the men with whom I work is their steadfastness – or to use another word, stickability. This is not always the case with men who approach the work with a great sense of urgency.

I’ve seen men more than once – after an initial burst of enthusiasm – quickly lose interest in the Lord’s work. Sermons have to be prepared every week not just on special occasions. People you counted on to help don’t follow through. The progress – if any – is slow.

Most men aren’t up for it. Bruce Massop isn’t most men. After circumstances beyond his control meant the ‘reboot’ at Grays became a ‘replant’, no one would have blamed him for saying this is not what I signed up for. Bruce didn’t say that. By God’s grace – as he always says! – he continued.

And he’s still continuing – evangelising, teaching, preaching, leading, planning, and many more things beside. No, it hasn’t always been easy. Yes, there have been disappointments.
But through it all he has shown me and others a remarkable ability to make haste without being hasty.

Will you take a few minutes to pray for Bruce today? Will you ask the Lord to continue to strengthen and sustain him for the work he has been called to do? Will you ask the Lord to raise up co-labourers – men of like heart and mind – to work alongside him? Will you ask the Lord to continue to bless his family including Kate who works for the Partnership and Micah who is deciding on where he should attend university?

Also, ask the Lord to continue to give all his servants the grace – and at times, grit – to make haste, slowly.

“Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.”
3 John 8 ESV
